Late-entry “recession special” takes itself very seriously in the interlocking stories of a group of well-paid Boston-area transportation executives – played by Tommy Lee Jones, Craig T. Nelson, Chris Cooper, and Ben Affleck, in descending order of effectiveness — learning the hard way about layoffs and the cruelty of life. TV vet writer-director John Wells (E.R., Southland, The West Wing) expects us to pity the guys, but his James L. Brooks-style white-bread suburban-angst approach produces mostly snickers, especially from construction-boss brother-in-law Kevin Costner, who actually makes things with his hands and has valuable lessons to teach. Long before it’s over you’ll want to hit Affleck with a hammer. (109 min.)
