Omar, an enterprising modern-lit scholar from New York (Omar Metwally), takes a chance and travels to the pampas of Uruguay to drop in unannounced on the family of a recently deceased author in hopes of getting access for a biography. But the author’s widow (Laura Linney), his mistress (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and his brother (Anthony Hopkins) present their own set of problems. This beguiling drawing-room-and-grassland drama by director James Ivory and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, the first Merchant Ivory production since the death of producer Ismail Merchant, doesn’t exactly hit us over the head with narrative incident. Instead, it dwells on character and characters, with Linney, Gainsbourg, and Hopkins leading the way. Fits very nicely into the “understated comedy of manners” corner of Merchant Ivory’s filmography, alongside The Bostonians and Hullaballoo Over George and Bonnie’s Pictures. Based on the novel by Peter Cameron (118 min.).
