In 1989, the “Central Park Jogger” case made international headlines and brought a storm of “crime of the century” publicity to the five young men of color charged with variously raping and beating a lone white woman, an investment banker, as she jogged on evening in the north end of New York’s Central Park. All five were convicted in the midst of a police, political, and media frenzy — and all five were eventually found innocent thirteen years later, after they had served prison sentences. This startling yet cool and methodical documentary by filmmakers Ken Burns (The Civil War, Baseball), David McMahon, and Sarah Burns puts the crime and the times in sharp perspective. It’s a must-see. (119 min.)
