Gag-filled political satire has reliable fun with two Southern congressional candidates trying to out-dirty-trick each other: a stupid but sly horndog (Will Ferrell) and a harmless twink (Zack Galifianakis) hired by business interests to win the election and do what he’s told. Ferrell is always good in this type of low-down comedy, and Galifianakis emerges as the second Bernie – too bad Jack Black got there first. The supporting cast is rough and rowdy: Jason Sudeikis, Brian Cox, Dan Aykroyd, John Lithgow, Dylan McDermott, Sarah Baker, and Karen Maruyama as Mrs. Yao, the rich man’s maid. A few brilliant moments, but director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) can’t quite sustain the outrageous humor into the final quarter. Blame that on writers Chris Henchy, Shawn Harwell, and Adam McKay.
