Drama
For his debut in the director’s chair, writer Guillermo Arriaga (21 Grams, Babel) launches yet another of his tedious, splintered narratives, this time involving three generations of troubled folks suffering various love dysfunctions — with Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger playing the most interesting sufferers. But really, just how interesting is this sort of storytelling, anyway? As usual, there’s far too little unity of time and place, as if that somehow echoes the confused mental state of the protagonists. Maybe Arriaga should go out into the desert alone and rethink his dramatic approach. With Joaquim de Almeida and Jennifer Lawrence (111 min.).
