The Builders and the Butchers

When: Wed., July 15, 9 p.m. 2009
Price: $10

The Builders and the Butchers have a band name that you won't soon forget, and a big unruly sound to match. The members of the quintet were born and raised in Alaska, but didn't discover American roots music until they moved to Portland. They embrace gothic country, bluegrass, gospel, blues, and other forms of acoustic mayhem, then Ray Rude kicks it into overdrive pounding on drums and assorted found objects. The band plays horns and Melodica as well as the expected guitars, banjos, and bass while singer Ryan Sollee testifies like a slightly drunken street-corner preacher. The Builders and the Butchers headline the Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St., San Francisco) on Wednesday, July 15. 9 p.m., $10. BottomoftheHill.com
