Outlandishly pathetic child's-eye view of the Holocaust pushes every conceivable button, as eight-year-old Bruno (googly-eyed Asa Butterfield), unbelievably innocent son of a Nazi death camp commandant (David Thewlis), secretly makes friends with a young Jewish inmate (Jack Scanlon) across the barbed wire, to disastrous effect. The stiff, awkward acting is only surpassed by the guilt-queer writing by novelist John Boyne and Mark Herman, the latter of whom directs in a permanent funk. Teary Vera Farmiga costars as Bruno's appalled mother — didn't she have any idea what an SS officer does for a living? Cut off the gas (93 min.).
