Action, Thriller
Let’s face it, actor Jeremy Renner doesn’t have quite the same emotional range as Matt Damon – so this Jason-Bourne-less sequel to the popular spy trilogy necessarily lacks something. But it strives to compensate. Commando/op Aaron Cross (Renner), who’s both agent for and victim of the vile national security bureaucrats back home (Edward Norton, Stacy Keach), needs to get himself off the “chems” the “program” uses to control its assets, so he enlists the aid of government scientist Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), and they run. Cross’ survivalist adventures with wolves in the snow and the couple’s parkour-and-motorbike chase through Metro Manila are well up to standard, and Renner is manly as hell, but somehow we miss the Bourne brand of heartache. It’ll have to do. Directed ably by old Bourne hand Tony Gilroy from a screenplay he wrote with Dan Gilroy (Tony’s brother), inspired by Robert Ludlum’s novels. Also with Scott Glenn, Donna Murphy, and Louis Ozawa Changchien as LARX-3. (135 min.)
