Longstanding metal duo The Body, which performs at the Night Light (311 Broadway, Oakland) on Saturday, boasts a harrowing and eclectic discography that encompasses molten doom and harsh noise amid detours into passages of pastoral beauty. And The Body’s collaboration earlier this year with the dark electronic artist Haxan Cloak yielded the band’s most surprising and breathtaking release yet. I Shall Die Here commands all of doom metal’s menacing imposition while rejecting most of its conventions. Only a couple moments feature what you might call “riffs.” Instead, The Body’s leaden thuds, low static rumbles, and hideously serrated vocals are vivified by Haxan Cloak’s deft production. Earlier Body records featured plenty of indistinct noise, swathed and defiled further by fuzzy recording, but Haxan Cloak’s presence brings the severe textures into hi-fi and couples them with the ominous electronic hallmarks of his own records. Extreme metal and electronic music have intersected before, especially in the later work of Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick, but I Shall Die Here realizes the fusion like never before.
