Comedy, Crime drama, Docudrama
This story of a clique of San Fernando Valley teenage girls (and one boy) whose after-dark hobby is to break into celebrities’ empty homes and steal their high-fashion clothes is very much in filmmaker Sofia Coppola’s comfort zone, but that doesn’t prevent it from being one of her best movies — mostly because of the writing. The combo of true crime and SoCal suburban decadence is irresistible, especially when ring leader Rebecca (Katie Chang) and her sidekick Marc (Israel Broussard) are mouthing director Coppola’s bitchy/brainless dialogue, adapted from a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales. The news that the screenplay is based on a real-life case does not surprise us in the least. It confirms everything we already think about people who obsessively watch TMZ. Costarring Emma Watson, Claire Julien, and Paris Hilton, who plays herself as the ultimate fashion victim-turned-crime stat. See how they run. (87 min.)
