The Bleeding Pianist

I'm not a cutter, I just can't stop biting my thumb cuticles.

I should have outgrown a long time ago biting and tearing at my thumb cuticles until they were raw and bleeding. This is a part of who I am and have been since childhood. Try as I can, I can't stop. Over the years I have applied medication and bandaged my thumbs for a couple of days until they healed. Then another couple of days will go by when suddenly I spy a little piece of cuticle begging to be ripped, and it starts all over again! It doesn't help that I play piano for audiences and it's embarrassing when they finally notice my thumbs. They give me that LOOK, and I know that LOOK. It's not like I'm a cutter — I'm much too old for that, nor am I angry, lonely, confused, anxious, or otherwise weird. Everything in my life is great! I just have this thing for my thumbs!
