Fast-casual chain The Bird specializes in fried chicken with a “farm-to-table” approach. That means free-range chicken, buns baked in-house daily, and a house-made slaw. The options include “spicy” or “regular” chicken — both seasoned with a berbere spice mix — which you can get in a sandwich, “naked,” or in a salad. And while the chicken itself — a juicy piece of dark meat — is tasty, the “spicy” version can get very greasy, especially in a sandwich. Vegetarians are limited to the salad, a mix of romaine lettuce and kale with braised beets, apples, spelt, and celery. For sides, the “loaded” curly fries are covered in a gut-busting mix of sour cream, bacon, green onions, and melted cheese. While The Bird’s sandwich isn’t a game-changer, it’s an affordable option in the expanding fried chicken scene.
