Historical drama, Thriller
Sofia Coppola’s remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood/Don Siegel “southern” – in which a wounded Union soldier during the Civil War gets taken in by a household of Confederate-sympathizing women -- benefits from the performances of Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Kirsten Dunst, but also from Coppola’s choice of material. The adaptor-director lays only the lightest of hands on the original screenplay by Albert Maltz and Irene Kamp, taken from Thomas Cullinan’s novel. Coppola’s lone misstep: Omitting the character of Hallie the African-American slave housekeeper. Aside from that, Coppola’s psychological gothic melodrama makes a neat entry in her filmography as she works her way through the genres (93 min., 2017, rated R) (K.V.)
