Filmmaker Agnès Varda’s autobiography is as whimsical and informed by fine art as her other films. Using her own voiceover narration, clips from her work, re-staged scenes from her life, and documentary visits to Belgian beaches and other significant locales, the maker of Vagabond and Cleo from 5 to 7 frames her life and career as a Jean-Cocteau-style testament to the playful spirit — exemplified by the presence of Zgougou the cat as well as by her relationship with her late husband, director Jacques Demy. Varda’s black-and-white photos from Cuba are a special treat. A wonderful introduction to the work of a unique personality (110 min.).
