The Bay Area: For the One Percent or for Us?

The transformation of the Bay Area into the tech capital of the world has made a few people very rich while decimating the lifestyles and livelihood of many others. As homelessness and rents rise and working-class families and artists vanish from the landscape of our cities, it’s clear that the Bay Area is on the brink of something. Whether that is total collapse or something better is what Speak Out Now, a revolutionary workers group, wants to discuss. Join them on Saturday, May 12, at the South Berkeley Senior Center for a forum and presentation with Dick Walker, author of Pictures of a Gone City: Tech and the Dark Side of Prosperity in the San Francisco Bay Area and former geography professor at UC Berkeley. Walker will discuss capitalism’s current — and hopefully temporary — triumph here. Taking a hard look at how we have ended up in this state may not immediately inspire hope, but as groups work on initiatives to make the Bay Area livable again, like the repeal of Costa-Hawkins, an evening like this can inspire you to action.
