The Bacchae

When: Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through March 9 2008
Price: $8, $10, $14

Gearing up to tackle more Euripides in April with The Trojan Women at Aurora Theatre (where she was founding artistic director), Barbara Oliver directs Cal students in one of the ancient tragedian's last works, The Bacchae, in which Dionysus opens up a can of whupass on the city of Thebes for not giving him his props. Next thing you know all the women of Thebes have taken to the woods for a crazed Bacchanalia that you really, really wouldn't want to interrupt -- which of course is exactly what Dionysus-dissing King Pentheus goes ahead and does. So lift a glass for the god of wine, citizens -- or else. February 29 through March 9 at Zellerbach Playhouse (Bancroft Way at Telegraph Ave., Berkeley). Theater.berkeley.edu or 510-642-8827.
