Comedy drama
The beginnings of a very good coming-of-age movie are in here, waiting to ripen. New York City private school student and budding fine arts painter George (English actor Freddie Highmore) is the proverbial “hard-to-reach” kid, lost in puppy love over gorgeous blond classmate Sally (Emma Roberts) but in deep late-homework trouble at school because of numerous worries, including his parents’ financial distress. If only writer-director Gavin Wiesen had relaxed and let one or two key scenes roll on a little longer and develop. We were hoping it would be more than just an Art School Confidential prequel, but even as it is, it’s not too shabby. Costarring Michael Angarano and Jarlath Conroy (84 min.)
