The Anvil Experience

When: Sun., April 12, 7:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $18

It sounds like the premise for a mockumentary à la Spinal Tap -- a metal band from the 1980s with bad haircuts and worse outfits that toured with Whitesnake, Scorpions, and other arena-rock acts, and earned praise from Lemmy, Slash, and Lars, but has since faded into extreme obscurity. It looks like it will be hysterically funny, until you realize that it's the true story of Anvil. And that the band -- now middle-aged -- is trying to make a comeback. As captured in the documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, the Canadian band embarks on a world tour, playing near-empty bars, traveling in an RV, and having heart-to-hearts about living the dream. It's a tragic, uplifting (or so the press notes promise) story, and it's coming to town on Sunday, Apr. 12 at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco), followed by a performance by the band. It will be the stuff of legends. 7:30 p.m., $18. Slims-SF.com
