The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs

When: Jan. 25-Feb. 27 2011
Price: $17-$73

Few can make tech-talk sound as dirty as Mike Daisey, a monologist who successfully combines investigative journalism with a bewitching performance style. For his latest play, Daisey found the sexy angle on Steve Jobs, a man who Daisey describes alternately as an imperialist and a technology wizard. Disguised as a businessman, Daisey snuck into the Foxconn factories of southern China where Mac products are made. He witnessed firsthand the execrable labor conditions that have caused workers to throw themselves from the roof of the manufacturing plant. In The Agony and the Ecstacy of Steve Jobs, Daisey reveals Apple's ignoble practices in minute, gory detail, carefully building a case against Jobs and the entire Mac empire. Yet he tempers that diatribe with a parallel narrative of computer fetishism, recalling his own experience with Mac products and electronics geekery. Only a true technophile could make such a convincing argument and single-handedly turn Mac into a wedge issue. Through February 27 at Berkeley Repertory Theatre (2025 Addison St., Berkeley). $17-$73. 510-642-4283 or BerkeleyRep.org
