Francis Ford Coppola achieves a light, melancholic, very European tone of regret in this drama about a pair of estranged American half-brothers — a young cruise ship crewman named Bennie (Alden Ehrenreich) and a bitter, failed writer who calls himself Tetro (Vincent Gallo) — who reunite in Buenos Aires and reluctantly dredge up the past. It’s Coppola’s best, most convincingly realized film since Dracula, helped along by Mihai Malaimare Jr.’s beautiful cinematography and, in color, a multi-part tribute to Michael Powell’s The Tales of Hoffmann. The well chosen supporting cast includes Maribel Verdú, Klaus Maria Brandauer, and Carmen Maura as “Alone” (127 min.).
