The mysterious case of Jacques Vergès, a French international attorney who has defended an astounding list of notorious characters, beginning with Algerian nationalist bombers and continuing through a Congolese dictator, a Gestapo mass murderer, members of the Khmer Rouge, various Palestinian terrorists, Baader-Meinhof gang hit men, a Serbian ethnic cleanser, etc. Documentary maker Barbet Schroeder (Reversal of Fortune) captures candid talking heads testimony from Vergès and many of his clients to produce a murky portrait of behind-the-scenes politics that only gets murkier as we get into Vergès' "missing years" in the ‘70s, when he hung out with Carlos the Jackal. Endless fun for conspiracy fans (132 min., 2007).
