Temescal Street Fair

When: Sun., June 7, 12-6 p.m. 2009
Price: free

With its phalanx of wine bars, pizzerias, Ethiopian restaurants, and chic cafes, Oakland's Temescal District is now touting itself as "the new gourmet ghetto" -- a title it earned in a 2007 headline from The Wall Street Journal. The district will celebrate its hipness at this Sunday's sixth-annual Temescal Street Fair, featuring a fashion show, arts-and-crafts booths, vendors from local restaurants (Lanesplitter, Bakesale Betty, La Calaca, Bear Naked Burgers, and their ilk), sidewalk chalk drawings, children's carousel rides, a green pavilion with bicycles and eco cars, and plenty of live music. Fito Reynoso y su Ritmo y Armonia will headline the main stage, with supporting acts Zanza, Cataracs, and Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company. Now in its sixth year, the event happens on Sunday, June 7, on Telegraph Avenue from 45th to 51st streets. It promises to make good on all the hype. Noon-6 p.m., free.
