We were expecting a light-hearted, fact-filled look at the phenomenon of the “youth market” Western pop culture, but Matt Wolf’s documentary is much more than that. Using a remarkable collection of seldom-seen archival footage, filmmaker Wolf follows the 20th-century rise of the teenage concept, fleshed out by actors’ voiceovers for diverse examples: an English “Bright Young Thing,” a Hitler Youth, a German “Swing Kid,” an African-American Boy Scout, etc. Wolf bases his approach on writer Jon Savage’s “punk history,” an amateur historian’s way to describe the anti-authoritarian impulse of the classic teenage rebel. Makes emotional sense in its buildup to euphoria. Written by Wolf and Savage (78 min.).
Director: Matt Wolf
Producer: Philipp Engelhorn, Michael Raisler, Jason Schwartzman, Andrew Goldman, Ben Howe and Kyle Martin
