Re: “Oakland City Council Should Censure Desley Brooks

In response to Deau Hicky,
Why does concern and criticism expressed here about a councilperson who divides and disgraces our town have to be about her race? I am what you demean as a "white folk" who's lived in this city for almost 30 years, but I have never "despised Oakland" and I have done more for this city than "only criticize, smirk and post ... subtle and coded messages of derision, like, "white guilt, not me!""
What does that even mean? And how do statements like that help make our great city come together and be even better?

Re: “Oakland City Council Should Censure Desley Brooks

I agree. Ms. Brooks is part of the new wave of leaders across the country, like Trump, who behave rudely, unprofessionally and without regard for decency and responsibility. I have watched city council meetings and been so embarrassed by the way she bullies and is abusive to citizens and her fellow council members. She, like Donald Trump, makes accusations and point fingers when concern is raised about her mishandling of funds, brawling in the chambers, etc. Now her bad behavior is going to hurt all of us even more.
We need to demand higher standards from our leaders, starting now, here, at home. Grass roots promotion of a better nation and government.

Re: “Oakland Officials Are Divided Over a Proposal to Create a New Department of Violence Prevention

What troubles me most is the way our elected officials speak to each other. I am weary of the antics and disgusted by the trash talking of some on our city council, Reid, Brooks.... while complaining about the the ways our city doesn't work. Perhaps more civility and etiquette training would be a better investment of city funds.

Re: “Were Oakland Police's Tactics Against Anti-Trump Protesters 'Excessive'?

No one got hurt and only a few fools vandalized the city and nobody had their business or car smashed to bits. For a change, Oakland had a powerful and peaceful assembly. Everyone I know who participated thought it was great and felt safe. I'm one of many Oaklanders who went to DC to march. There was a general unease among many of us from the Bay Area that Oakland would get out of hand and provide Trump with ugly, unruly evidence against those who oppose his agenda. Thank you to everyone who came out and made our city proud and to the cops who safeguarded her citizens and streets.

Re: “Oaklanders Understood Ranked Choice Voting

The complication is not how to check boxes, but how to check boxes so that we don't have another disaster. Or allow me to vote for the same candidate for first and second place. Last time the winner was not the city's top choice, it was our third place choice, if I remember correctly.
Even though, this time, my candidate won, I still prefer the old way. Let the candidate with the majority win in the first round, if not have a run off and allow voters time to adequately review and compare candidates. We had what?...13...candidates in the race. I didn't have time to vet each one.

Re: “Handymen at Vessel Gallery

Yes, fabulous work. Surprising, elegant and whimsical. Love the mixing of material textures in Gordon Glascow's work. Lonnie Lee always finds the most amazing work by new and talented artists!
