Drama, Mystery
Writer-director Matt Sobel’s debut feature gets maximum mileage out of the story of a nervous gay California teenage boy named Ryder (Logan Miller) and his disastrous trip to a Nebraska farm with his mealy-mouthed parents (Robin Weigert and Richard Schiff), for a family reunion. At the top of Ryan’s worry list is his precocious pre-teen cousin Molly (juvie actress Ursula Parker), whose not-so-innocent games with her fish-out-of-water cousin take a sinister turn that colors the entire, queasily enjoyable drama. Sharp lines, pitch-perfect character acting (especially by Josh Hamilton as Molly’s redneck dad), and an unsettling air of unexplained mystery mark filmmaker Sobel as a talent to watch (84 min.).
