The better the musical lineup, the better the musical documentary. This ingratiating documentary tribute to Memphis’ R&B heritage boasts a killer roster of performers both old (Bobby “Blue” Bland, Mavis Staples, Booker T. Jones, Snoop Dogg, Charlie Musselwhite, Otis Clay, et al.) and new (rappers Al Kapone, Yo Gotti, Frayser Boy, and Lil’ P-Nut). They meet each other in the recording studio, where music-producer-turned-filmmaker Martin Shore “updates” R&B numbers from the Sixties and Seventies with hip-hop rhymes. The experiment works. The film drips with Southern funk. Narration by actor Terrence Howard, who gets to sing his own song with the Hi Rhythm Section. A winner (95 min.).
Director: Martin Shore
Producer: John Beug, Cody Dickinson, Jerry Harrison and Brett Leonard
