Oscar Michel and Jake Weiss started Tacos Oscar as a pop-up in 2014. Its first brick-and-mortar opened in Temescal in November 2018, featuring the same tacos that made Tacos Oscar so popular to begin with: fried huevo tacos, charred broccoli tacos, and chile verde tacos all served on hand-pressed tortillas. The fried egg taco has a slightly runny yolk and crisp, lacy edges, topped with queso fresco and served on a thick, chewy housemade tortilla. Garnishes vary but might include crunchy, tangy pickled red onions and herb salsa made with cilantro, parsley, mint, and shallots. Michel said the vegan charred broccoli tacos have drawn skepticism, but they’re a worthy option for vegans and meat eaters alike, with peanut-arbol chile salsa and surprisingly spicy habanero pickled onions. Don’t miss the nopal salad tostada, if it’s available — made with a smear of impossibly creamy Peruvian beans and topped with cactus, mushrooms, cabbage, and smoky toasted chili oil.
