Re: “In Rockridge, a Rarefied Crime: Flower Poaching

I live in Berkeley. Someone recently ripped my rose bush apart while trespassing and stealing. Some may call such thefts small potatoes but (a) it's trespassing and shows that it's all too easy for someone to come onto your property. The easier it is for them to trespass without being called on it, the easier it is for them to break into your house and not get called on it. and (b) if you think people who commit these crimes stop at this level, you're nuts. Many of them have a smorgasbord of crimes they feel comfortable committing.

I was recently plant-sitting for a friend in Berkeley. Both times I arrived there to water, people were stealing from their front yard fruit tree. The second time, a woman was high up in the fruit tree with a gunny sack. And was very casual when called on it.

Whether the police actually have the resources to do anything about it or not, I urge people to report these crimes so there's an accurate picture of what's going on. It's trespassing and it's theft. They both need to be accurately represented in our crime statistics.
