Comedy, Drama
No, no, no, Philip Seymour shouldn’t play another weak-willed intellectual schnook — he should be playing against type instead. That’s only one of the many faults of writer-director Charlie Kaufman’s symbol-laden psychodrama about a Schenectady (get it?) theater director unhappy with his life, his wife (Catherine Keener), and everything else. What about us? We’re hurting, too, watching this arch, obscure, emotionally unengaging, interminable cloud bank of a movie. Was Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc.) ever any good? Also in the wasted cast: Samantha Morton, Emily Watson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Dianne Wiest, Hope Davis, and Tom Noonan (124 min.).
