Swimming with the Creatures of the Monterey Bay

When: Thu., Jan. 15, 6:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $5-$20

For centuries, these creatures existed only as myths and legends in the minds of ordinary people; today, we can see them up close and personal -- but much still remains to be learned about sharks, rays, whales, and giant squid. In the Oakland Zoo's Marian Zimmer Auditorium (9777 Golf Links Rd., Oakland) on Jan. 15, marine researcher Sean R. Van Sommeran, executive director of the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, delivers a lecture titled "Swimming with the Creatures of the MontereyBay." The lecture details natural history, current research, and volunteer opportunities. 6:30 p.m., $5-20. OaklandZoo.org
