Swervedriver

When: Fri., April 6, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $19, $21, $44

Seems like everyone's pining for the Nineties these days: wearing plaid, listening to shoegaze, reminiscing about Pearl Jam and the days before the Internet sucked up our lives. Musically speaking, there were a ton of great bands that never "made it" but whose one or two hits were the fodder of 120 Minutes and countless mixtapes. One of those criminally and perennially overlooked bands is Swervedriver, whose hazy, shoegazey sound was marked by driving, grungy guitars and catchy pop hooks. A US tour in support of Soundgarden and a breakthrough hit, "Duel," in 1993, gave it a taste of mainstream success, but the band suffered from an unstable lineup and flaccid support from its record label (meanwhile, its peer, Radiohead, catapulted to fame -- the two emerged around the same time from the Oxford area of England). After disbanding for a decade, Swervedriver reunited in 2008 for a world tour and a Coachella appearance. Now the band (vocalist/guitarist Adam Franklin, guitarist Jimmy Hartridge, bassist Steve George, and drummer Mikey Jones, filling in for Graham Bonnar) is back with another North American jaunt, with the promise of new material to be released later this year. Franklin's dreadlocks may be long gone, but his wistful pop tunes remain. With New York's Heaven at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Friday, Apr. 6, 9 p.m., $19. SlimsPresents.com
