Tim Burton used to be an interesting director. Last time was in 1994, when he made Ed Wood. 2007 finds him in the employ of the indifferent songs and mall-ready gothic gore of Stephen Sondheim’s hoary old Broadway musical (b. 1979) about a vengeful shave-and-haircutter (overexposed Johnny Depp, in customary clown makeup), a purveyor of stinky meat pies (Helena Bonham Carter), and the fiendish judge who stole Sweeney’s wife (Alan Rickman). Overproduced, even for Burton, whose busy murkiness makes “Edward Razorhands” a chore to sit through. For the record, Rickman and henchman Timothy Spall are kind of fun to watch. Screenplay by John Logan (95 min., 2007).
