Swann Danger

When: Mon., June 1, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: $8
Rock critics in the 1960s often implored readers not to trust anyone over thirty. Now the onetime ageists’ old musical subjects are reuniting to celebrate the passage of fifty years. No thanks — let’s look to the low-key reunions, without the self-congratulatory postures and attendant sycophancy. Swann Danger, an East Bay act composed of players from several noted punk bands, released several records between 2003 and 2010. On Monday at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records (420 40 St., Oakland), Swann Danger is playing for the first time in a while. Who cares how long. Swann Danger dealt in throbbing post-punk and macabre goth theatrics, an immediate antecedent to bands such as Screature, from Sacramento, and now much more fashionable since the crossover success of bands such as Savages. Swann Danger plied familiar tropes, garnering plenty of comparisons to the low-hanging fruit of post-punk referents, Siouxsie & the Banshees (a slightly less lazy comparison to Killing Joke is more apt). Still, the group’s live moxie and choice releases such as Thin & Gold presented a fearsome unit in high command of the style’s paramount tension and drama. Thankfully, that does not mean that this first show in a while and last show for a long while is being hammed up too preciously.
