Susan Sherman

When: Thu., Jan. 26, 7 p.m. 2012

In The Little Russian, by debut novelist Susan Sherman, protagonist Berta Alshonsky falls in love in the Jewish town of Mosny. This could be uncomplicated, except that the object of her affection is a member of the Jewish Workers League who smuggles arms to the shtetls to protect the Russian countryside from pogroms, or violent, organized attacks. It could also seem far-fetched, except that the tale is based on the experiences of Sherman's grandmother. She reads at A Great Good Place for Books (6120 La Salle Ave., Oakland) on Thursday, Jan. 26. 5 p.m., $20. 510-339-8210 or GreatGoodPlace.indiebound.com
