Action, Crime drama, Thriller
The remake of the influential 1972 urban action flick brings tons more technical spectacle but slightly less actual characterization to the tale of dope-hustling pimp Youngblood Priest (Trevor Jackson) and his busy, gaudy, ultra-violent attempt to corner the cocaine market in Atlanta. Director X, the director, piles on the set pieces and writer Alex Tse, adapting Phillip Fenty’s original screenplay, adds a Mexican drug cartel to the enemies list. Despite the timeliness of the remake, all they manage to do is dilute the earlier film’s funkiness in favor of flash. The original movie invented clichés; this one merely recycles them. Nice jobs by soundtrack curator Future and actors Jason Mitchell, Jennifer Morrison, and Renée Victor, as the meanest abuelita in Juárez. (108 min., 2018, rated R)
