The matter-of-fact story of the short major league career of a young Dominican Republic baseball pitcher named Sugar — for the sweet knuckle curve he throws — transforms itself into one of the best “border crossing” dramas, in the guiding hands of the writing-directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It’s also a damned fine baseball movie, with former beisbolero José Rijo adding authenticity. But the show truly belongs to Algenis Pérez Soto, a non-actor, as the sincere, good-natured rookie making his way through the USA and meeting a cast of everyday people. Has the same basic premise as Lost Boys of Sudan, but with the added attraction of realistic baseball action. Also with Rayniel Rufino, Andre Holland, and Jaime Tirelli (120 min.).
