Suckling Pig, Smoked Brisket, and Boilermakers: East Bay Father's Day Deals

Making Father's Day plans? Several East Bay restaurants are offering special deals and special meals, including seriously glam ones.

FIVE at Hotel Shattuck Plaza is offering a $32 Sunday brunch including endless mimosas. Sans mimosas, the brunch — which features local, seasonal, and organic ingredients and includes such items as smoked beef brisket au jus, orzo mac-and-cheese with tomato jam, French toast with Grand Marnier butter, and vanilla-bean butterscotch pudding — is $16 for children aged six to twelve, and free for those five and under. That night, prime rib will be on the dinner menu. FIVE has a new culinary team under the direction of Executive Chef Banks White and Creative Consulting Chef Scott Howard.Â

Thanks to executive chef Josh Thomsen, Meritage at the Claremont is serving its standard unbelievably fabulous Sunday brunch with the world's best view (and arguably the world's best waffles, along with dozens of other dishes spanning the world); dads score complimentary boilermakers, which are cocktails comprising whisky and beer.

Buttercup Grill & Bar is offering a special three-course $19.99 Father's Day meal at its five East Bay locations including Caesar salad, slow-roasted prime rib au jus with creamed horseradish, baked potato, vegetables, and a massive, meal-in-itself wedge of stratospherically fluffy, creamy, master-class cheesecake. Like that of all sweets served at Buttercup (which offers diners an unusual "dessert-of-the-month-club" deal), its recipe was devised by co-owner, ingenious baker, and James Beard Award-nominated author Debbie Shahvar.

Chevalier in Lafayette will serve a dad-inspired a la carte dinner whose menu choices include roasted Colorado lamb with couscous, ratatouille, harissa and rosemary jus; roasted suckling pig with polenta, green beans and ginger honey sauce; grilled New York steak with green beans and baked potato topped creme fraiche and chives; and Alaskan halibut with white risotto, asparagus, baby vegetables and beurre nioise. All meats served here are hormone- and antibiotic-free; in his menu, owner-chef Philippe Chevalier seeks to re-create his native Provence.

Gather will serve an a la carte brunch whose selections will include Acme walnut French toast with braised strawberry-kumquat topping, maple walnut sauce and Straus yogurt; fried egg and roasted merguez sausage with chickpea ragout and preserved lemon aioli; roasted market vegetables with spicy lentils and soft grits; and young chicken under a brick with heirloom bean hominy ragout and shaved spring radish.

Montclair's Italian Colors will serve Father's Day specials including frutti di mare soup with herb oil; antipasti of fresh Dungeness crab, avocado, papaya, English cucumber, and a chili lime vinaigrette; freshly baked pizza with prawns, pancetta, caramelized onions, Spanish manchego cheese, and crushed red chilies; grilled seabass with lobster and pea risotto, and basil pesto aioli; Niman Ranch Porterhouse steak with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus with red wine demiglace; and pasta with duck ragout, spring garlic, duck jus and handmade lemon ricotta ravioli.

Lake Chalet at Lake Merritt is offering a prime rib a la carte dinner special.

Having served many generations of fathers by now, Spenger's will offer dad-inspired a la carte specials from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.; these include leg of lamb, house Applewood smoked prime rib, and stuffed salmon. Dads will also be eligible to win guy-inspired prizes in the restaurant's free Father's Day raffle.
