The original Stylistics got together in high school in Philadelphia in 1966. Their first recording, “You’re a Big Girl Now,” became a regional hit and led to a long association with legendary Philly soul producer Thom Bell. Between 1971 and 1976, the high, shimmering falsetto of original lead singer, Russell Thompkins, Jr., and the tunes crafted by Bell, and his partner Linda Creed, led to a series of gold albums and singles that topped the R&B, Easy Listening and Pop charts. The band’s chart success may have peaked in the ’70s, but they have remained a headlining attraction in Europe and here at home. Although they’re had a few changes in their lineup, original members Airrion Love and Herb Murrell continue to anchor the group’s signature sound. Current lead singer, ex-temptation Barrington Henderson, makes the familiar hits come alive and the group is still guaranteed to make you feel brand new.
