Keanu Reeves’ face is getting puffy. Here, as a James Ellroy-style bent, alcoholic Los Angeles cop caught in a web of LAPD corruption and treachery, he mostly shoots his way out of a string of jams. It gets repetitive. Amid the overlapping frame-ups and double-crosses, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie, and Chris Evans costar as fellow officers, with Cedric “The Entertainer” Kyles as Scribble the head snitch. Originally titled The Night Watchman, the screenplay was written by Ellroy and two other guys, and directed in a flurry of bullets by writer-turned-helmer David Ayer (The Fast and the Furious, Harsh Times) (107 min.).
