Story-Tellingest Washhouse

M&A Laundramat

Most Laundromats are places to sit quietly and watch your clothing spin around. M&A, however, is a place to hear tales of the war, Muddy Waters, and the civil rights movement. Calvin, longtime owner and operator, will regale you with the many stories of his lifetime as you fluff and fold. He has tales from his time in WWII, where he took a piece of shrapnel in the arm. He has stories about his family's big move from Mississippi to the Bay Area, where his son drowned in a pool across the street. And he spins fantastic yarns about blues legend Muddy Waters and his journey from the Deep South to Chicago. According to Calvin, Muddy hoboed his way to the Windy City and was pulled from his boxcar by irate police working the train yards. When they asked him what he did for a living, Muddy said he played guitar, and when he proved it, the police holstered their batons and let him go free. This is the only Laundromat in the Bay Area where you can learn about the blues while washing them away. And if you ask nicely, Calvin just might put on a record to break the monotony of buttons smacking against dryer drums.
