Drama, Thriller
Sour, claustrophobic drama puts four powerhouse actors through their paces in screenwriter Angus (Junebug) MacLachlan’s story of characters on a collision course. Mild-mannered parole officer Jack Mabry (Robert De Niro) is almost ready to retire, but first there’s the matter of convict “Stone” Creeson (Edward Norton), serving time for essentially murdering his grandparents, and Stone’s sexy, manipulative wife on the outside, Lucetta (Milla Jovovich). Complicating things further are Jack’s troubled history with his wife (Frances Conroy), their shared religious feelings, and the burnt-out landscape of the Michigan countryside outside Detroit. By the time MacLachlan, director John Curran (he did The Painted Veil with Norton), and the cast are done with us, we feel as hustled as Jack. But it hurts so good. (105 min.)
