Jerry Brown didn't just get lucky. He had a clear vision for where the city was headed. Like it or not, you knew where he stood: Cutting red tape for developers, especially those who wanted to put housing downtown. 10k 10k 10k.

He was doing that in 1998, well before the housing boom, and well before the resulting tax surplus arrived. He kept doing it, kept plugging away at that vision. Dellums, in contrast, farmed out specifics of his vision to a bunch of unwieldy commissions and people still don't know where he stands on many key issues.

So even if their work hours were the same, Jerry still earned his success, just as Dellums earned his failure.

(Brown sucked on crime though, in the end. But he got the big picture right.)
