The short form lends itself especially to writers and actors. Most of the shorts in this ambitious package are worthy of expanding for their own sakes, but in effect we’re getting seven condensed feature narratives in the time it usually takes to see one, like the best excerpted scenes from seven different movies. That’s the case with five of the seven, including two fractious meet-ups written by Neil Labute (After School Special and Sexting with Julia Stiles); a cute 'n’ comfy senior-citizen comedy with Judi Dench (Friend Request Pending); a nervous urban encounter between Colin Firth and Keira Knightley (Steve); and the best of the lot, The Procession, in which Lily Tomlin and Jessie Tyler Ferguson lead a comical motorized funeral procession. Not a bad average after all. A presentation of ShortsHD, the same group that presents the annual Oscar shorts programs. (total running time 113 min.)
