In a beat-out corner of the San Fernando Valley, a questionably employed, twentyish “would-be actress” named Jane (Dree Hemingway, great-granddaughter of Ernest) forms an unlikely bond with a cranky octogenarian widow named Sadie (Besedka Johnson, in her first screen role). The rest is director Sean Baker’s skill with mood and setting, as we learn more about the newfound friends and the slightly dangerous world they inhabit. Nice character-acting work by Stella Maeve, James Ransone, and Karren Karagulian as Jane’s associates. We could call it “Boogie Days” and not be far off the mark. Written by Baker and Chris Bergoch. (103 min.)
