Located in back of Star Grocery, Star Meats is an independently run, old-school butcher shop that sells exclusively hormone- and antibiotic-free meat. Among the shop’s many virtues, neighborhood folks are especially fond of the stellar lunchtime sandwich menu. In particular, don’t miss the Fat Albert, a generous portion of rare house-roasted Niman Ranch top round, cheddar, and arugula, served on a La Farine rustic baguette. The kicker: a dollop of smoky chipotle mayo. Even though the roast beef is the only deli meat that’s cooked in-house, other sandwiches — like the Goodfella (a riff on a classic Italian sub) and the off-menu Dirty Bird (turkey, pastrami, curry garlic aioli) — are well worth checking out.
