Your grade schooler won't notice, but Robert Rodriguez's fourth Spy Kids adventure is one of the more personal American movies of 2011. The explicit theme of juggling a career and parenthood—and ultimately learning to combine the pleasures of the two—runs deep for Rodriguez, though for this installment, arriving eight years after Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, he's replaced the original spy family with a new one. The visual effects are as gleefully shoddy as ever, and the playful ideas sometimes achieve a dreamlike suggestiveness: the central villain's ability to accelerate and stop time echoes, of all things, René Clair's surrealist classic The Crazy Ray (1925). With Joel McHale, Jessica Alba, and Jeremy Piven. (89 min.) (B.S.)
Director: Robert Rodriguez
