Sprouts of the Motherland

As we kick off the Independence Day weekend, we’re reminded that few things are more American than celebrating the country’s immigrant roots — preferably by feasting on a few of the cuisines that make up this rich, multicultural potluck we call home. That’s the premise of this popup at Crate Oakland (420 14th St.), for which chefs Afiba Johnson and Alejandra Espinoza will cook a six-course Jamaican/Asian fusion dinner, with an optional bourbon cocktail pairing to add a dose of Kentucky flair. Featured dishes include jerk chicken bahn mi and sake-braised short ribs with spicy kimchi. Thursday’s popup will be the first event organized by the Ethnic As Phuc entertainment group — a name that leaves no question as to the kind of swagger its proprietors hope to bring to the table. RSVP by paying a non-refundable $25 deposit via the Sprouts of the Motherland Facebook event page.
