A crack flying squad of actors – including Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Brian d’Arcy James, and Billy Crudup – takes a public-affairs workout with director Tom McCarthy’s dramatization of the Boston Globe’s 2002 exposé of pedophile sexual crimes amongst Roman Catholic clergy in that city. The real-life reporters and editors won a Pulitzer Prize for their work. No doubt McCarthy, screenwriter Josh Singer, and the cast are angling for awards of their own. But that doesn’t mean this newspaper drama lacks human interest or Grade-A actorly firepower, especially Ruffalo and Keaton. Brisk, businesslike, and still quite shocking (128 min.).
