Horror, SciFi/Fantasy
Wow! Biotech – and social – miscues multiply when the runaway research of a pair of genetic engineers (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) produces a baby thingie that looks like a cross between a seal pup and a chicken. Things get even gooey-er when the fast-developing artificial life form grows into adolescence and takes on the face of French vedette Delphine Chanéac. Director Vincenzo Natali’s very Cronenberg-ish, very smart fantasy puts the “science” back in sci-fi, and all three lead actors make the most of the screenplay, by Natali (Nothing, Cube), Antoinette Terry Bryant, and Doug Taylor. Splendid visual effects. And the sexual angle puts it in a completely different category than about 99 percent of mainstream monster movies. Vive la différence. Guillermo del Toro and Joel Silver are among the exec-producers. Recommended (104 min.).
