Speaking Truth in the Teeth of Power

When: Fri., Nov. 23, 7 p.m. 2007
Price: free

Writer and activist Ward Churchill may be persona non grata in the Ivory Tower, but he wears it like a badge. In a now-infamous 2001 essay called "Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens," Churchill described the World Trade Center attacks as a reprisal for the US government's aggressive foreign policy, then went a step further by characterizing the stockbrokers and traders who perished in 9/11 as deserving of their fate, since they represented the country's "global financial empire." Though the flap over that essay caused Churchill to lose his ethnic studies professorship at the University of Colorado at Boulder, he's since become a huge free speech icon. Churchill will appear at Oakland's AK Press Warehouse this Friday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. In a lecture called "Speaking Truth in the Teeth of Power," he'll discuss the suppression of dissenting voices in academia and the effects of colonization in the US. $5.
